CALDWELL, Idaho – Caldwell Mayor Garret Nancolas said he was surprised when he received a letter last Wednesday from PETA asking him to change the name of Chicken Dinner Road.
“I thought this is a joke. Who’s punking me?” Nancolas said of receiving the letter. “This is the real deal. They’re asking us to change the name of the road because chicken have feelings.”
According to Nancolas the road has been named Chicken Dinner Road since the 1930s. Nancolas says a woman named Laura Lamb was famous for her chicken dinner. She invited the governor of Idaho to her home, and prepared the famous dinner. While he was there, she asked the governor to address the condition of the road she lived on. The road was paved. Shortly after, “Lamb’s Famous Chicken Dinner” was painted on her house, and the name stuck with the road. It has been known as Chicken Dinner Road ever since, Nancolas says.
However, Nancolas says the road is outside of Caldwell.
“Even if the city wanted to change the name, which we don’t, it’s not in our jurisdiction.”
On their website, PETA says they would like the road to be renamed Chicken Road.
“Just like dogs, cats, and human beings, chickens feel pain and fear and value their own lives,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is asking Mayor Nancolas to change this road’s name to one that celebrates chickens as individuals, not as beings to kill, chop up, and label as ‘dinner.’”
