His father, Gail, was an army officer, and his mother, Martha, a daycare provider. He had a younger brother, Michael Jeffrey, who died of a heart attack in 2006. Woods was raised in Warwick, Rhode Island, by his mother and by stepfather Thomas Dixon. He attended Pilgrim High School followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He majored in political science but never completed a degree.
