Simone Manuel is an American swimmer and Olympic gold medalist. She became the first African-American woman to win an individual Olympic gold medal for swimming. Manuel was born to parents Marc and Sharron on August 2, 1996, in Houston, Texas. She has two brothers, Ryan and Chris. Manuel attended Austin High School in Fort Bend County. She currently attends Standford University where she swims for the Stanford Cardinal women’s team.

CAREER
Manuel was inspired to become a swimmer after watching her older brothers compete in the summer league. She began training at the age of 4, and by 11 she became a member of the First Colony Swim Team. Manuel continued her swimming career at Stanford University under coach Greg Meehan. She broke the NCAA 100 yard freestyle during her freshman year. She’s also won the NCAA championship multiple times.

In 2013, Manuel won her first team gold medal at the World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona. She followed up with two silver and a bronze at the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships. She won a second gold medal for the 4×100 meter freestyle at the 2015 World Championships in Kazan. Manuel made her Olympic debut at the 2016 Summer games in Rio de Janeiro. She won gold in the 100-meter freestyle and silver for the 4×100 meter freestyle relay. The 100-meter gold medal was shared with Canada’s Penny Oleksiak who also finished with a time of 52.70 seconds.
